🌿 A Little Joy Between Loads
Mental health isn’t only about processing pain, it’s also about making space for joy, humor, and lightness. Laughter resets the nervous system, softens perfectionism, and reminds us that healing doesn’t have to be heavy.
Laundry is a perfect mashal for our inner world: we all collect some stains, we all need a good wash now and then, and with care and patience, everything can come out clean again.
So here’s a playful reggae tribute to post-holiday life: “International Jewish Laundry Day.” Because even the messiest piles can become music. 🎶
Lyrics below.
🎶 International Jewish Laundry Day
[Chorus 1]
I got a lotta laundry, ya man, a lotta laundry for me, I got a lotta laundry, piles and piles I see. I got a lotta laundry, yeah, Divine decree No laundry on the Holiday, now it’s back to reality!
[Verse 1 – The Great Laundry Shortage]
No clean laundry left, it’s a national scare, I’m diggin’ through baskets with a desperate stare. One kid’s got one black sock and one white, Another’s in pajamas with feet too tight! The guests used up all our extra linen, Keepin’ that washer forever spinnin’. Every kitchen towel, every last shmateh, And I need a white shirt for my little Shabbos Tatte! But we’re smilin’ and laughin’ it’s all gonna be fine, ’Cause holiness shines through the laundry line!
[Bridge – Hakafot at Home]
In shul they’re doin’ hakafot tonight, Seven rounds with the Torah, such holy sight.
But here in my mess, I’m sortin’ with might, Seven loads of darks and seven loads of whites. The washer keeps hummin’ all through the night, Holy spin cycles bringin’ garments to light!
[Chorus 2]
I got a lotta laundry, ya man, a mountain to slay, I got a lotta laundry, post-Yom Tov display. Happy International Jewish Laundry Day! Together we’re mighty in the fight to clean the whites today!
[Verse 2 – Sukkot & Simchat Torah]
Built that sukkah with love and joy, Plenty of delights for every Jewish girl and boy. Eight days of feastin’, we sat in the breeze, Now there’s crumbs in all the pockets and stains on the knees. The tablecloths look tie-dyed, a rainbow parade, From every kiddush and spill that was made. Now we spin the washer, clean body, clean soul, Fighting every stain is a spiritual goal!
[Bridge 2 – Laundry Mountain]
The laundry is piled so high (so high!) You can see it from the sky (the sky!) Watch out, Great Wall of China, here comes a pile even higher! Eventually, I know it’ll all be clean, If I can just climb over the greatest piles you’ve ever seen. Sock by sock, shirt by shirt, I’ll make my way, Scalin’ Mount Laundry this post-Yom Tov day!
[Verse 3 – Unity Through Laundry]
Whether you’re Ashkenazi or Sefardi, today we all unite, Our shirts are smeared with jachnun, kugel, matbucha - what a sight! A little kreplach on the collar, a tzimmes stain just so, Today we stand together ’gainst our common foe. The kittel, once so shiny and white, Is smeared with tastes of every culinary delight! So raise your detergent, let the water flow, Shmutz be gone, my friend, ’cause you know…🎶 I got a lotta laundry… ya man… 🎶
[Verse 4 – Laundry Champion Finale]
I wonder if the neighbors are noticin’ the smell, It’s a good thing they’ve got einiklach and guests as well. If we held a laundry contest, I’m sure that I’d win, I’d hold high my trophy as I watch the towels spin! There’s joy in the chaos and suds in the air,International Laundry Day, we’re all in there!
[Final Chorus – Singout]
I got a lotta laundry, ya man, a mountain to slay,I got a lotta laundry, post-Yom Tov display. Happy International Jewish Laundry Day! Together we’re mighty in the fight to clean the whites today!
